How do I use Propranolol?

Propranolol dose depends on the patient’s situation; it comes in strengths of 10mg and 40mg. 1 tablet (10mg or 40mg) can be taken one daily up to three times depending on your doctor’s instructions. 

Propranolol is not effective for the psychological symptoms of anxiety which include:

·       Difficulty concentrating

·       Restlessness

·       Difficulty controlling day-to-day worries

·       Trouble relaxing

·       Irritability

·       Consistent feelings of fear/dread

 Can I use Propranolol if I am on other medication?

Propranolol should not be used if you take the following medications.

·       Heart medication – diltiazem, verapmil, nifedipine

·       Asthma or COPD medication

·       Heart regulating medication – flecainide or amiodarone

·       Diabetic medication – insulin

·       High blood pressure medication 

Can I use Propranolol if I suffer from any medical conditions?

·       Heart failure

·       Asthma or COPD

·       An overactive thyroid

·       Diabetes

·       Low blood pressure or a slow heart rate

·       Blood circulation problems

Can I use Propranolol if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Propranolol should not be used in patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to get pregnant unless instructed by your doctor

Can I drink alcohol while taking Propranolol?

Alcohol and propranolol should not be mixed as this can result in a dramatic decrease in your blood pressure which results in dizziness, lightheaded, and fainting.

How long will it take Propranolol to work?

This can vary from patient to patient but should have an effect on symptoms within 1 to 2 hours after taking a dose. If no improvement there are a variety of treatments that can be trialed and you should consult your doctor

How long should I use Propranolol?

Propranolol should be used for as long as it is prescribed by your doctor. If there are no improvements after 4 weeks then your doctor should be consulted to discuss an alternative.
