Betamethasone valerate 0.1% cream is a prescription-only topical corticosteroid treatment that helps reduce inflammation and redness of itchy skin. Using the active ingredient betamethasone valerate 0.1%, this medication helps reduce symptoms of common inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis.

How do I use Betamethasone cream/ointment?

Betamethasone cream/ointment should be applied thinly and evenly onto the affected area once or twice daily. As the condition improves Betamethasone should be used less frequently as instructed by your doctor.

It should be applied to all affected areas. Betamethasone should not be applied to irritated skin, cuts, or burns.

Betamethasone should be applied to the skin and away from lips, mouth eyes, or face unless instructed by the doctor.

Hands should be thoroughly washed before and after applying medication unless hands are being treated.

Can I use Betamethasone alongside other steroid treatments?

It is fine to use other creams such as moisturiser/emollients but they should be applied 30 minutes after the steroid has been applied.

Can I use Betamethasone on my child?

Betamethasone should not be used in children under the age of one year old. It should be used as directed by your doctor but should not be used more than once or twice a week on your child.

How long will it take Betamethasone to work?

This can vary from patient to patient but results can be seen after a few days. If no improvement after 2 weeks there are a variety of treatments that can be trialed and you should consult your doctor

How long should I use Betamethasone?

A short course for 7 – 14 days is often sufficient treatment but your doctor will specify if they want treatment to continue for longer. If there are no improvements after 2 weeks then your doctor should be consulted to discuss an alternative.
